10 Creative Storage Hacks for Small Craft Rooms

Crafting in a small space can be a challenge—but it’s also an opportunity to get clever, stylish, and totally Pinterest-worthy with your organization. Whether you’re sewing, paper crafting, or doing a little bit of everything, your space should be as creative as you are.
Here are 10 smart storage hacks that will help you maximize every inch of your craft room (or closet, or corner nook!) while keeping it functional and oh-so-pretty.
1. Clear Colored Bins: Pretty AND Practical
One of my favorite ways to stay organized is by using **clear bins in soft, happy colors**. They let you *see exactly what’s inside* without digging—and bonus, they add a pop of aesthetic joy to your shelves.
Tip: Sort by category (fabric scraps, embroidery thread, embellishments, etc.) and label them for quick grabs during your next creative streak.
2. Pegboards = Vertical Magic
If you’re not using your walls, you’re missing prime real estate. Pegboards are a game-changer for small spaces. Hang scissors, rulers, washi tape, spools, and more—and rearrange as your projects evolve.
See the one’s I use here. What I like about them is that the pegboard itself is easily paintable (of course mine is pink), and the holes are universal size so practically any accessory kit fits.
Customize it with little shelves or cups to hold odds and ends. It’s organization and décor.
3. Hooks: Your Underestimated Heroes
Add command hooks inside cabinets, on walls, or even on the side of your desk. Use them to hang embroidery hoops, rulers, or small baskets for thread and yarn.
Hack: Put hooks inside your closet door to hang tote bags filled with in-progress projects.
4. Go Vertical with Stackable Drawers & Shelves
Floor space may be limited, but that ceiling is just sitting there doing nothing! Stackable storage drawers or cube organizers let you build up without cluttering the room.
Look for clear or color-coordinated options to keep the look cohesive and intentional. I used IKEA’s Kallax cubes, and the look is exactly what I was going for. The cubes are large enough to hold most storage containers, and my sewing machine even fits into one.
5. Rolling Carts = Portable Craft Stations
If you don’t have a dedicated craft room, a rolling cart lets you store your essentials and move your studio wherever the light is best.
Theme each tier by project type—top for tools, middle for fabric, bottom for paper. This is my NO. 1 go-to for organization. Don’t laugh but I like this one, because again, it comes in pink.
6. Magazine Holders for Paper & Patterns
Vertical magazine holders aren’t just for your reading pile—use them for scrapbook paper, vinyl sheets, or even folded fabric fat quarters.
They fit perfectly on narrow shelves or desktops and keep everything upright and unrumpled. You can see mine in the photo, but alas, they all actually hold magazines.
7. Under-the-Desk Storage Bins
That empty space under your desk? Perfect for low-profile rolling bins or drawers. Store your least-used items there and pull them out when needed.
Tip: Great for seasonal supplies or bulky items like batting and interfacing.
8. Use Curtain Rods or Tension Rods for Ribbon and Thread
Install a curtain rod between two shelves or in a window frame to hang spools of ribbon or thread. Not only is it functional, but it turns your collection into a colorful wall feature! Peg hooks are also great for hanging spools of thread. I keep my most-used colors at the ready.
9. Label Everything (Stylishly)
Cute labels don’t just keep you organized—they make you “want” to stay organized. Use a label maker or printable labels to tag every bin, basket, and box.
Match your labels to your aesthetic for a cohesive, calming vibe.
If you’re looking for some cute pre-printed labels, check out these labels in the Paper and Thread Store. All you have to do is print them on label paper and cut them out.
10. Repurpose Furniture You Already Own
That bookshelf? Craft storage. That nightstand? Ribbon drawer. Get creative with what you already have! Add dividers, bins, and trays to maximize every nook.
Check thrift stores for small dressers or side tables that can be upcycled into stylish craft storage with a coat of paint.
